Using IRLStream
Short guides for setting up your box, going live and keeping the stream healthy.
Claim your box
Link a new box to your account. Takes about 2 minutes.
The label on the box has its serial number, a claim code (XXXX-XXXX), the name and password of its setup Wi-Fi, and a QR code with all of it.
- Claim it. Scan the QR code with the IRLStream iPhone app, or on the web open Boxes → Claim a box and type the serial and claim code.
- Connect it. Power the box on. With Ethernet that has internet, it activates by itself. Otherwise join its setup Wi-Fi (named like
IRLStream-1234, password on the label) from the app and choose your Wi-Fi. - Watch it activate. The box page shows each step (Wi-Fi connected → activating → activated). The box turns Online within about 2 minutes.
Wrong Wi-Fi password? The box re-opens its setup Wi-Fi within a minute. Rejoin it and try again. Five wrong claim codes lock that serial for an hour.
Giving a box away: on its page choose Release. The box is reset to factory settings and you get a new claim code for the next owner. The old code stops working.
Go live from OBS
Send any encoder (OBS, a phone app, a hardware encoder) to IRLStream, which restreams to every destination.
- On Stream, open Show OBS settings on your ingest.
- In OBS → Settings → Stream choose Custom. Paste Server (
rtmp://rtmp.irlstream.ai:1935/live) and your Stream key. - For SRT, use the SRT URL from the same panel as the server and leave the key empty: the key travels inside the URL.
- Add Twitch, YouTube, Kick or a custom RTMP target under Destinations, then press Start streaming in OBS.
- Suggested output: x264 or hardware H.264, CBR, keyframe interval 2 s, 720p30 at 4–6 Mbps or 1080p30 at 6–8 Mbps, AAC 160 kbps.
- The relay copies your video as-is, so each platform gets exactly what you send. Keep it within the strictest platform's limits.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Regenerate it from the ingest if it leaks.
Go live from the box
Start, tune and stop a stream from the box page, from anywhere.
- Open the box from Boxes. It must be Online.
- In Go live pick the ingest, the transport, a quality preset (Low 368p to Ultra 1080p), frame rate and bitrate, then Go live.
- While live, the Max bitrate slider in Live stats changes the encoder on the fly; Stop stream ends the session.
Transports (the default is the first your ingest offers):
- SRTLA (bonded): splits one stream across every uplink (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, cellular) and rejoins it in the cloud. A link joins only after it passes an internet check and drops out within a second if it fails. The Network card shows each link.
- SRT: one link, but recovers lost packets. Used automatically when bonding can't connect within about 12 seconds.
- RTMP: the last resort; no loss recovery.
Under Advanced: ABR (on by default for SRT/SRTLA) lowers the bitrate when the network struggles and climbs back slowly; set a minimum bitrate as its floor. SRT latency (500–4000 ms, default 2000) trades delay for resilience: raise it on shaky cellular.
Filters & AI
Privacy and polish, processed on the box before the video is encoded.
- Face blur: GPU face detection, about 30 detections a second at 720p.
- License plate blur: blurs number plates. Accuracy varies by region.
- Auto frame: a smooth 16:9 crop that follows the subject (up to about 2× zoom).
- Panic blur: blurs the whole frame instantly (optionally mutes audio).
- Noise suppression on the mic, Color grade and Slate.
Toggle them in the Filters card on the box page. Because they run before encoding, viewers never get the unfiltered picture. A greyed-out filter shows why it is unavailable on this box.
Scenes & BRB
Switch what viewers see without dropping the stream.
- HDMI: your camera. USB 2: a second USB webcam, when one is plugged in.
- Slate: a branded card such as BRB, Starting soon, Low bandwidth or your own message.
Switching is instant and never reconnects the stream, so chat and players stay put.
Auto BRB: when the bitrate sits at its minimum for 10 seconds, or every link is down for 5, the box shows the Low bandwidth slate instead of a frozen picture. It switches back once the connection has been healthy for 10 seconds. Unplugging the camera shows No HDMI input. Picking a scene yourself always wins; turn Auto slate off in the Scene card to disable it.
Local recording
A full-quality copy on the box, even when the uplink struggles.
- On the box page, turn on Record locally in the Recording card.
- The box records whenever it streams, in five-minute segments. The card shows the current file, free space and every segment.
- Delete segments you don't need from the card. Segments older than 14 days are removed automatically.
The box always keeps a free-space floor (about 2 GB). Below it, recording pauses with a warning and resumes on its own once space is freed.
Updates & rollback
Boxes update themselves over the air, safely.
- New versions arrive automatically. A box never installs while streaming; it shows Waiting: stream active and installs after you stop.
- Each install runs a self-test. If anything fails the box rolls back by itself to the version it ran before. A typical update takes under 2 minutes.
- The Software card shows the installed and target version. Check on box asks the box directly; Roll back returns to the previous version (it interrupts a running stream).
Alerts
Know when something needs you, wherever you are.
- Open Notification settings (also in the account menu).
- Choose rules: box offline (after N minutes), back online, stream dropped (after N seconds), update failed / installed, low disk and recording stopped. The cooldown stops repeats for the same box.
- Add channels: email, or a webhook for Slack, Discord or your own endpoint (optionally signed with a secret). Press Test to check delivery; a failing channel shows its last error.
Every alert also appears under the bell in the header and on the Notifications page.
Troubleshooting
Common symptoms and what to do.
- Box shows Offline
- Check power and that at least one uplink has internet. If its Wi-Fi changed, the box opens its setup Wi-Fi after about 2 minutes: join it and pick the new network.
- Transport shows SRT instead of SRTLA
- Bonding couldn't reach the receiver, so the box switched that session to single-link SRT. You are still live. The next start tries bonding again.
- "No HDMI input" slate
- The capture card or camera isn't detected. Re-seat the HDMI cable and the USB capture card; the box switches back to the camera on its own.
- Silent audio
- Audio comes only from an external USB/HDMI capture card. Re-plug the card and check the camera's HDMI audio output is on.
- BRB slate keeps appearing
- The uplinks can't carry the minimum bitrate. Add a link, move to better signal, or pick a lower quality preset.
- "Waiting for the box…"
- The command was delivered but not yet confirmed. The page re-checks every 5 seconds; most commands confirm within a few seconds.
- Update says "Waiting: stream active"
- Updates never interrupt a stream. Stop streaming and the box installs it.
- A filter is greyed out
- The reason is shown next to it, usually a model that isn't installed in this box's software. Updating the box often fixes it.
- Recording paused
- Free space is below the box's floor. Delete old segments in the Recording card; recording resumes on its own.
